Abstract:
This session will explore the implications for archives of increasingly restrictive copyright systems. It will discuss the Creative Commons open licensing system, including efforts to promote the licenses internationally, and the possible applications of these licenses in the archival setting.
Auditoire visé:
Archivists and public policy makers
Overall purpose and significance of session:
Raise awareness of alternatives to the copyright system and begin a dialog concerning the role of archivists in intellectual property issues.
Content description:
The speakers will discuss international models for increasing access to information content, focusing on the Creative Commons International project. In keeping with the work of the Free Software Foundation, the Center for Public Domain, and the Open Source movement, Creative Commons licenses seek "to build a layer of reasonable, flexible copyright in the face of increasingly restrictive default rules... help[ing] people dedicate their creative works to the public domain — or retain their copyright while licensing them as free for certain uses, on certain conditions.” The Creative Commons licenses have been adapted to the legal systems of over forty countries and translated into over thirty languages.
