Abstract:
This session describes aspects of an ongoing program of change over multiple fronts within an archival institution: changing from an institution concerned with documentary heritage to one that adds the responsibilities of a National Archive, expanding its services and programs and moving from the paper-based archival world into the electronic archiving age. The specific aspects focussed on are changing the competency-base of the organisation, growth and change in its collections and the processes employed to manage them, modernising the IT support infrastructure and widening its outreach.

To share information and experiences of an archival institution undergoing significant change in order to meet new challenges.
Content description:

The seminar will include a number of short presentations describing the ongoing transformation of the Center of Documentation & Research (CDR) in Abu Dhabi, and the approaches that have been used to implement change.

The presentations will include:

  • the development of a documentary heritage institution over 40 years in the Arabian Gulf and the drivers of change;
  • the development of a new strategic plan and performance indicators to measure progress;
  • the development of a new competency framework for archivists and its use in developing a training and human resource strategy;
  • the evaluation of and changes to collection development;
  • the development of a new IT system to accommodate advances in technology; and
  • the development of new programs and services to expand the engagement with the community and to explore revenue generating opportunities.

The presentations will describe a work in progress and will be followed by a panel and audience discussion.
