Abstract:
This one-day workshop, divided into four 90 minute sessions, is designed to examine and introduce participants to the underlying concepts and principles of electronic records management (ERM) and to discuss the issues that need to be addressed in designing and implementing ERM in the Commonwealth. It will draw on the framework of training modules being developed by the International Records Management Trust (see Congress session 074 Training in Electronic Records Management: Introducing a New Educational Package) which addresses critical issues in ERM and helps to provide practical solutions and clear guidance for records and archives practitioners, particularly in developing countries.
Auditoire visé:

The workshop is primarily intended for members of the Association of Commonwealth Archivists and Records Managers (ACARM). Space is limited to 30 participants; pre-registration is required. Additional spaces will be provided for non-ACARM members if registration is not full.

Overall purpose and significance of session:
The records management systems in most Commonwealth countries are paper based, even though governments are increasingly creating their information electronically. Archivists and records managers need to consider now how this electronic information should be managed so that it can be made available when required and can be preserved to meet business and historical needs.
Content description:

This is an all-day workshop, consisting of four separate but inter-related sessions, and will comprise a mixture of theory and practice. There will be an opportunity for hands-on computer operation. The four sessions will focus on:

  • Basic principles and practices
  • Making a business case for ERM
  • Developing file plans
  • Appraisal and preservation

Participants will gain practical knowledge and will arm themselves with information and guidance that will put them in a better position to make strong cases for taking the planning and development of ERM systems forward.
