Abstract:
The Session will focus on challenges for the handling of business records and archives in the corporate world globally. Business archives represent information about the main actors in the formation of the world in all sectors. It is widely acknowledged that higher consciousness about the importance of business archives is needed and that professionalism and transparency in the governance of business archives preservation needs to improve. The session focuses on these difficult challenges, with presentations performed by highly skilled archivists sharing a wide in-depth international experience.
Auditoire visé:
Any congress participant involved with the handling of business records and archives. This includes not only managers, employees and archivists in the private sphere of society but also participants from the wide range of public and private institutions that collect, preserve and perform research services from business archives collections.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
Spread knowledge and alter attitudes to the importance of business archives in society. To draw attention to the importance of making business archives challenge targeted issues at national archives conferences and in educational programs worldwide.
Content description:

The six speakers represent comprehensive international experience on the issue of preserving business archives. The section emphasizes the role of ICA in mapping the future of business archives preservation. It addresses issues of transparency - and lack of transparency - in the corporate world, the ability within parts of the corporate world to turn business archives into a corporate business and means of shaping cultural identity, and the need for increasing the skills and professionalism in the improvement of the archive profession outside the government sector.
