Abstract:
Given the often heard remark “archives are just a bunch of old paper,” it is necessary to demonstrate to agents in an administration from the beginning of their tenure the utility and importance of good archival practice. This presentation will discuss ways of raising the profile of archival services by showing their efficiency and necessity for administrative transparency.
Target audience:
Archivists working in an administration whose principal responsibilities are accession and training.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
To brainstorm and discuss ideas for educating new employees in an institution on the importance of archives and records management.
Content description:
This presentation will discuss two resources—a brochure and packet of instructional documents—created for educating new employees in an administration of the importance of archives. These materials were written in a clear and simple language, corresponding to an audience who is not necessarily familiar with archives. Over the course of the session, these materials will be presented for discussion, experimentation, and reflection.
