Abstract:
This paper reviews a model that was developed from a research project undertaken by the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and other leading advocates of electronic records management. The model is devoted to general patterns in education and training in electronic records management for record keepers; namely archivists, administrators, records managers and IT personnel. It outlines the development of a generic model for vocational and professional education and training for electronic records management and describes its application in Malaysia. This paper concludes by considering the value of the model that was created and its possible application to populations beyond the sampled record keepers.
Target audience:
Records and archival educators, records managers, archivists, administrators, IT personnel and other records and archives practitioners.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
This study provided the first ever case study of education and training in electronic records management in Malaysia. It represented the first ever attempt to create a model to address the issues pertaining to knowledge and skills of electronic record keepers.
Content description:
This study was based on a review of various concepts in education and training, as well as concepts underpinning the four pragmatic examples of education and training programmes in electronic records management developed in Europe and the UK. This generic model was used to explore the emergent issues in Malaysia that were related to the need for knowledge and skills in electronic records management. The model was discussed and tested with the Malaysian record keepers through five focus group sessions.
