Abstract:
Two truth commissions in Asia--one in Timor-Leste and one in the Republic of Korea--worked hard to preserve their records. In this session, an archivist from each country will describe the actions the commission took during its lifetime to ensure the preservation of records after it closed and whether these advance steps did, in fact, help secure the integrity of the commission records.
Target audience:
Archivists from countries with truth commissions; archivists interested in the relationship between active records management and subsequent archives preservation.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
The session will highlight two important truth commissions, which both successfully preserved important records. It focuses on Asian truth commissions, unlike much literature that looks at truth commissions in Africa and Latin America.
