Abstract:
Ian E. Wilson will address the efforts undertaken to renew recordkeeping in the Government of Canada. Participants will learn how institutional, organizational, human, and regulatory frameworks, as well as the external environment, have led Library and Archives Canada to organize forums to facilitate senior public servants to share their insights on the issues concerning the management of information and documentary production, at the highest level of the public service. Those sessions led to the creation of an action plan within the Government of Canada.
Target audience:
Executives and information professionals interested in learning of the emerging requirements with respect to managing records within organizations.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
To provide the international archival community with the Government of Canada perspective on managing government information and to present the Recordkeeping Regime and the recommended approach to involve organizations and entities governing recordkeeping in the federal government.
Content description:
Efficient Recordkeeping establishes administrative and business coherence within the government in order to make decisions, develop policy, provide legal evidence of activities, and deliver programs and services to citizens. Over the years, the requirements for efficient recordkeeping have evolved. The G8 countries, including Canada, have developed adequate measures in order to diminish the risks associated with inadequate recordkeeping practices: that include a decrease in the delivery of services offered by government, the responsibilities associated with legal requirements, and the confidence of citizens in their government. During this session Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada will present the approach developed in order to respond to the challenges posed by recordkeeping in the Government of Canada.
