Abstract:

The debate will revolve around three challenges in the area of notarial archives:

(1) Sharing sources and historical knowledge:

  • The Mediterranean Archives Multimedia Project presented by Paola CAROLI of the State Archives of Genova, Italy
  • Digitizing Notarial Archives : the Canada-France project presented by Geneviève ETIENNE, French Archives Directorate
  • Spanish Experiences presented by Maria José JUSTO, Historical University Archive of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

(2) Notarial Archives and Citizens' Legal Security: Notarial Archives and Public Service in Algeria presented by Mohamed BOUNAAMA, National Archives of Algeria.

(3) Authenticity, Notarial archives and electronic records : Early experiences of French and Spanish Notaries presented by Marie-Françoise LIMON-BONNET, National Archives of France, Minutier central.

Target audience:
Directors of institutions containing notarial records, archival educators, archivists collecting or processing notarial records, notarial institutions, members of the ICA-SAN, and others.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
The session will present the project for an international manual on notarial archives. It will include a retrospective bibliography, a list of notarial institutions around the world, resources for training in the field of notarial records, and an examination of the principles of fonds and sub-fonds as applied to finding aids for notarial records.
