History of ICA's involvement in the area of standards with particular reference to standards for description. Outline of the work of the Committee on Best Practices and Standards in supporting and coordinating the development, maintenance and application of standards for archival practice.

History of standards activity in ICA. Discussion of the importance of standards in archival practice, challenges in the development of standards - resource needs, coordination with related professions and others active in standards development, endorsement of archival standards at the international level. History of descriptive standards work and the working groups and the individuals involved, achievements to date and future plans.
