Abstract:
In order to increase the visibility of the archival profession today it is necessary that archivists understand what it is we do in our jobs and positions. In addition to a discussion of the skills that are or should be required of archivists in the twenty-first century, it is necessary to outline a methodology for creating a model for archival skills. This process invites several questions. The Association of French Archivists, like many other archival associations, has devoted itself to investigating these questions and hopes to bring clarity to the process through its experience. This session will serve as a compliment to the SPA/EURBICA seminar on the same topic.
Target audience:
Archives and records management professionals
Overall purpose and significance of session:
The goals of this session are to outline the essential characteristics of a model skill set for the archival profession, to underline the role of professional associations in this process, and to show through the experience of the AAF the inevitable difficulties of this exercise.
Content description:
Based on the work of a brainstorming group within the Association of French Archivists, the session will discuss the following questions: What are the objectives for developing a model for archival skills? Who are the possible actors that would contribute to developing such a tool? Who is the envisioned audience? How should it be presented? Is it a multiform tool? Can the methodology for its development be modelled, or is it inseparable from its cultural, professional and social contexts? The session will not serve as forum for debate on the necessary qualifications for archivists in the twenty-first century. That theme will be treated in other congress sessions.
