Abstract:
The establishment of the National Archives Bangladesh in 1973 ushered in a new era for archives in the country. The institution, however, which was founded upon the colonial system of records keeping, still lacks a strong influence on the Bangladeshi state and society in the area of information management. The National Archives building itself was built in 1985 and renovated in 2006, and an acquisition policy was developed in the late 1990s. However, the institution still faces a lack of a professional training, of digitization projects, and of a sense of archival awareness in the country at large.

Content description:
This session will discuss the state of the National Archives in Bangladesh, focusing on acquisition policies, cooperative projects with cultural and educational institutions in the private as well as public sectors, professional training programs, and nascent digitization programs within a governmental context of decentralization and development.
