Abstract:
Antonio González Quintana will present the updated Report on the Management of State Security Records of the former repressive regimes published in 1996 at the request of ICA and UNESCO. The new report is extended to the archives of non governmental organizations.
Target audience:
Archivists living in former repressive regimes and those interested in dealing with material related to this period.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
The objective of the session is to give legal and practical advice to concerned archivists and to raise awareness on a sensitive issue.
Content description:
Both governments and archivists face difficulties in managing the records of State security services of former repressive regimes after their fall. Since 1995, new countries experienced the transition to democracy and used those records in this process. Preserving the records of the non governmental organizations that defend the victims of these regimes is also crucial for the establishment of truth and justice, for the fight against impunity, and for obtaining reparation.
