Abstract:
What has happened in Darfur in the past 3 years and how has the work of the United Nations in Sudan been documented? The session will describe the capacity building efforts of the United Nations Mission in Sudan in collaboration with the UNDP office in South Sudan and UNEP Nairobi office in the area of information management in an effort to boost transparency, good governance and access to information.
Target audience:
Archivists interested in records management in developing countries
Overall purpose and significance of session:
The objective of the session is to give information and background to those concerned archivists and to raise awareness of a sensitive issue. It covers issues of development and how [if at all] archives can assist the process.
Content description:
Darfur continues to be a problem for the international community but the issues of on-going development in Southern Sudan are just as fragile. This session will highlight the efforts of the United Nations in Sudan and efforts to build the local capacity to deliver a degree of good governance and access to information of the affected communities. Is this even possible? Are there situations which do allow a solution to be reached and how can information provision enhance anyone's life in such a dire predicament? Is all the talk of cutting-edge 'web enabled access' at the international level just that - 'talk'?
