Abstract:

(1) France has a long tradition of constructing archival buildings. These buildings have evolved considerably over the last century. How is the notion of sustainable development now taken into account in the conception of these buildings? Which architectural techniques are implemented in this context? What are the most recent innovations for interior layouts and floor plans?

(2) The future building for the Archives Départementales du Nord – a building with a positive net rate of energy consumption- will be presented in detail by the director of the institution.

Individuals participating in planning projects for new archival buildings or additions to existing buildings.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
Archives buildings built recently in France reflect the importance which numerous communities grant to their archives. These unique endeavours are of interest to architects as well, challenging them to create attractive structures that encourage communication and good preservation.
