Abstract:
The official public launch of the ICA-AtoM archival description software. This session will demonstrate the software and talk about the history and future of the ICA-AtoM project.
Target audience:
Archivists interested in free, multi-lingual, ICA-standard compliant software to make their archival holding available on the Web.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
The culture of open-source software projects is one of co-operation and knowledge sharing. The ICA-AtoM project can act as a catalyst to further promote international collaboration around professional best practices in archival description and the management of archives technology. It also provides the opportunity for archival institutions to pool their limited financial and technical resources to share in both the burden and reward of implementing software to manage their archival holdings.
Content description:
In collaboration with a number of partners, the ICA has recently launched an open-source software project to help create a web-based archival description application that is based on ICA standards. This session will provide a demonstration of the first version of the software. The developer will discuss the requirements and design of the application as well as features planned for upcoming versions. The project management team will discuss the history and long-term vision for the project, its governance and organizational structure, training initiatives, and the benefits that the ICA-AtoM project can bring to the international archival community. This session will be supplemented with hands-on training workshops during the ICA Congress.
