Abstract:
Discussing the theme of transition is important to the archival field in countries with 'new democracy'.
Target audience:
Representatives of archival institutions of the post Soviet republics and countries of the Warsaw coalition and other interested people working in archival sphere.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
This session will familiarise the audience with almost 20 years of experience with archival systems in transitional governments in the states of the former 'socialist camp'.
Content description:
The fundamental political, social, and economic changes in the twentieth century (1980-90) affected the archival sphere of the former Soviet republics and the countries of the Warsaw coalition as well. These changes required substantial modifications in the archival systems of those countries, including new approaches to acquisition and use of archival documents. The integration of the former party archives into state archival institutions became one of the important trends. Archives facing new challenges have to improve and often change the standard methodological and legislative basis of archival activity.
