Abstract:
Two papers, one by an academic (Anne Gilliland, UCLA, USA) on reconceptualising research in ARM and reporting on current state of academic research, and one by a practitioner (Caroline Williams, The UK National Archives) on the role of research in service-focused organisations, how to bridge the gap between academic research and practice needs; plus discussion. Chaired by Elizabeth Shepherd. Session organised by ICA/SAE
Target audience:
Archive and records management practitioners interested in the role of research in professional practice; archival educators; academics and researchers in the discipline of archives and records management; those interested in professional training; doctoral students.
Overall purpose and significance of session:
This session will explore the nexus between professional practice and research in the archives and records management discipline. It will present two perspectives through the main papers, that of the academic and that of the professional practitioner, in order to explore what research is in our discipline, what value research adds to the academy and to practice, why we think research is important, how research activity needs to be re-thought better to meet current and future needs, and how it can be embedded in our discipline.
