Abstract:
To complement ICA-ISAD(G) and ICA-ISAAR(CPF), the Committee of Best Practices and Standards of the International Council on Archives (ICA/CBPS) has just developed two international standards. The first one provides a framework for describing functions of records creators (International Standard for Describing Functions or ICA-ISDF), the second aims to enable archivists to describe institutions with archival holdings (International Standard for Describing Institutions with Archival Holdings or ICA-ISDIAH). This session explains the purpose and use of ICA-ISDF and ICA-ISDIAH and describes the process of development of both standards. The session will also explore the relevance and application of ICA-ISDF and ICA-ISDIAH in various archival descriptive systems.
Target audience:
Archivists, records managers, information specialists
Overall purpose and significance of session:
Functions are often transferred from one corporate body to another. Therefore, it will be much more difficult for the users to reconstitute the context of records creation, if they are only provided with authority records describing corporate bodies that performed the same function. Separated but linked descriptions of functions can improve the understanding of that context and can be used in conjunction with ICA-ISAD(G), ICA-ISAAR(CPF) and ICA-ISDIAH as a tool for efficient retrieval of archives and creators descriptions in archival descriptive systems. This approach constitutes the basis of the new International Standard for Describing Functions or ICA-ISDF. Users who have access to archival descriptive systems on the Web need to know where archives and records described in those systems are physically held and made available to the public. With this purpose, a working group of the Committee on Best Practices and Standards developed ICA-ISDIAH, an international standard to describe and provide information on institutions with archival holdings. It is to be used in conjunction with ISAD(G), ISAAR(CPF) and ICA-ISDF for designing descriptive systems and for developing directories of archival institutions.
Content description:
The session will provide information on the development process of ICA-ISDF and ICA-ISDIAH and will illustrate the purpose and use of both standards. The session will also explore the relevance and application of ICA-ISDF and ICA-ISDIAH in various archival descriptive systems accessible on the Web, developed in Australia, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and other countries. A question and answer session will be included.
